Tuxtla Gutiérrez (Spanish pronunciation: [ˈtustla ɣuˈtjeres]) is the capital and largest city of the Mexican state of Chiapas. It is considered to be the state’s most developed city, with most of its public buildings dating from the 20th century. One exception to this is the San Marcos Cathedral which began as a Dominican parish church built in 1560 for Zoque natives. Prior to this, there had been no significant settlement on the site. Unlike many other areas of Chiapas, Tuxtla is not a tourist attraction, but it is a transportation hub for tourists coming into the state, with a major airport and bus station.
